Missouri Man Becomes First Modern Man in State to Take Deer With Atlatl

Missouri Man Becomes First Modern Man in State to Take Deer With Atlatl

In 2010, Missouri opened up deer hunting to hunters using a primitive weapon, the Atlatl.

The atlatl consists of a shaft with a cup or a spur at the end that supports and propels the butt of an arrow or spear. It is used to create a mechanical advantage, propelling the projectile at speeds up to 100 mph. The stone-age weapon was used to take down megafauna, such as mammoths and giant ground sloths. It was eventually replaced by the bow.

Drunken Moose Freed from Tree

Drunken Moose Freed from Tree

Per Johansson was going to his home in Saro, Sweeden when he says he heard screaming.

"It was raining really bad. In the wind I heard something... with a very dark voice. At first I thought it was the crazy neighbors."

It wasn't the neighbors. Upon further inspection, Per realized that there was a large moose stuck in his neighbors apple tree. The inebriated cervid must have gotten drunk from eating fermented apples lying around the tree, and in an attempt to get more apples, tried to climb the tree, only to get tangled up and stuck in it's branches.

How I Fell For Hunting

How I Fell For Hunting

I recently came across an article written by a gentleman, Wayne Hooper, of the Seacoastonline.com (http://www.seacoastonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20110906/SPORTS...) commenting on the pace of hunting and how it fails to draw younger children. I thought I would share my story, and how I got into hunting, and grew to love it.

Congragulations goes out to lsumne, who not only managed to bag an impressive bull moose this hunting season, but also won our Best Deer Contest (yes, a moose is member of the deer family, so it counts.)

For our Log your hunt finals, Buck took home the prize for his observations of the games played by squirles he witnessed while hunting.

Congrats to our winners.

Kansas boy scores on MOOSE

Kansas boy scores on MOOSE

Let me tell you what, your heart is pounding, the breathing is loud, and the tree your standing next to is not big enough! At 5 yds. a bull moose is BIG! We called him in from 300 yds. PSE bow and Wasp Hammer SST broadhead did the trick. He ran 25 yds and died within 10 yds of the boat. So now I have over 600 lbs. of delicious meat and a 52" rack hanging in th living room at home.

Canadian Mule Deer

Canadian Mule Deer

Hey Everyone,

I have spent the last couple of very cold days in western Alberta, Canada.  It was -16 Celsius today, but worth every cold minute!  I happened across this fine Mule Deer, while walking a cut line and he is now in the process of making some very fine sausages for me and my family!  I have not measured him up yet but just for comparison sake I am 6'6" and 190 lbs.
